RM Technical Seminars Spring 2012

We're still as enthusiastic about improving the knowledge of ICT Support Teams as we were 20 years ago. Throughout the day our sessions include efficient network management, Apple devices and network infrastructure, as well as giving you the chance to meet with your peers and RM Education's technology partners.

Join us for the day and improve your technical knowledge.

Here's what previous delegates thought...

  • "Great day! Friendly and informative staff - recommended!"
  • "Really enjoyed the day! Learnt a lot and met some interesting people. Looking forward to Spring!"
  • "Great to have a day out of school, improve IT knowledge, meet peers and a good lunch!"

How do you work with RM Education at the moment?

I have an RM Education network with a current support contract

You are probably entitled to two pre-paid places at each of the seminar rounds (Spring and Autumn). This is based on the type of support contract you have, so please read NWS1411417 to check how many places your establishment receives.

If you would like to bring more delegates than your pre-paid entitlement, then please book online as usual, and you will automatically be invoiced £85 (plus VAT) per place beyond your entitlement.

I don't have an RM Education network or a support contract

The Technical Seminars are a valuable addition to your CPD programme, whether you have one of our networks or not and you are welcome to come along for just £85.00 (plus VAT) per delegate. Please book your place online and you will automatically be invoiced.

David Wright

I joined RM Education in 1999 and have worked in Customer Support, Network Managed Services as a Technical Support Manager and in RM Training as their Lead Trainer. I have been part of the Seminar team for two years and this will be my first round as Lead Presenter. I have an honours degree in Computing and enjoy looking at how technology in education can be used to enthuse and engage users, and of course making the Network Support Team's life easier!

Matt Edwards

I have worked for RM Education for 10 years, starting out working on the switchboard. I have worked through first, second and third line support and specialising in hardware support. I eventually moved to our hardware development department where I worked as an engineer, focusing on hardware quality and new product introductions. I moved to the seminar team as a presenter in 2010.

Gethin Nichols

I have been with RM Educationfor over 11 years, working in Product Management as a Specialist in classroom technologies, AV and innovation. This is actually my 7th seminar round as a presenter, appearing in various guises that stretch back over the past 10 years, but it's my first time back doing technical sessions for a couple of years. When not presenting, I can mainly be found training my two sons (4 months and 22 months old) to play for Wales in the 2031 Rugby World Cup, not at all trying to compensate for my own mediocre rugby career.

Session Descriptions

Developing an Effective AV and Classroom Technology Strategy

AV is one of the fastest evolving elements of school ICT, making it difficult to maintain a cohesive strategy when purchasing is spread over a number of years. This session allows you to take a deep breath and let somebody else do the work of researching and comparing all the competing technologies available. Whether it's LCD v DLP, 3D, OLED or BYOD, the session explores the pros and cons of present and future AV, exploring networking, connectivity, digital signage and how AV and classroom technologies dovetail to create a powerful strategy. Good AV can save you both cost and time, and is the foundation on which ICT can provide tangible teaching and learning gains - this session explores how.

Negotiation Techniques

Life (especially your working life) is seemingly one endless negotiation after another, and it's rare to stop and think about the mechanics of how these all play out. This session will do just this, exploring a range of techniques and scenarios that are specific to your role, and help to improve the way you handle negotiations. The increasingly multi-faceted nature of the ICT profession in education makes these skills all the more essential - be it communicating with staff, teachers, students, SMT or external bodies (even support providers!). The session should point the way towards making these processes easier for both you and the party you are negotiating with, resulting in the best outcome for everybody involved.

Introduction to Programming

What happened to the Computer Club? What happened to learning how to program? Companies such as Google, Microsoft and the Government, have been talking about the 'Lost Generation of programmers'. In this session we will look at how you can introduce programming back in to school and how you can be the font of knowledge when students and teachers are asking how to program. We'll also look at options for allowing users to program on your network whilst keeping it secure.

CC4 Troubleshooting: Drivers

Operating system drivers are something we all use on a daily basis but do we understand what they really are and how they work. In this session we will be looking at how drivers work with both hardware and operating systems, how drivers integrate with CC4 for RM and non RM hardware, and most importantly; how to troubleshoot driver problems. If you are currently managing any network this session will be of use, if you are managing a CC4 network this session will explain how to understand CC4 driver support and how to diagnose any problems you may see.

Managed Wireless Networks

This session is a good old fashioned demonstration based affair - showing a managed wireless solution in action. We'll be bringing along the wireless infrastructure, management and devices to run data, voice, video and multimedia applications over a Meru wireless network, so you can see in real time how a solution is managed. The session aims to replicate the stressesand strains of a school network, connecting a multitude of different devices in high user density configurations - from single band XP to dual band dual stream Windows7 laptops, VoIP phones, iPads, iPods, and iPhones. We'll see just how the system copes, monitors, manages and communicates performance. How the presenter copes is a different matter!

Managing Apple Devices

Schools have been using Mac laptop and desktop computers now for some time and now more schools are starting to deploy iOS devices. One of the concerns with Network Managers is how to manage these but in this session we will look at how to control, configure and manage Apple Mac computers and how you can be confident about using iOS devices in school - whether they have been purchased by the school, or users are bringing their own devices in.

CC3: What Next?

Time is running out for those of you using Community Connect 3. In this session we'll be looking at your options for your next generation network. We'll examine how the move to Community Connect 4 can be best implemented in your school, whether it be a complete migration or a gradual move of your Community Connect 3 computers and users to CC4. If you're currently using CC3 then this is the session that will demonstrate the ease of moving to Community Connect 4 Management toolset.

CC4 Management: Your way to an RM Easylife

The network manager has many jobs to do within a school, some proactive and some reactive. In this session we will be looking at different software solutions to simplify some of these jobs as there are now a range of remote and scheduled management tools available which can help to manage both your proactive and reactive tasks. The object of this session is to demo some of the ways you can manage your CC4 network more efficiently and hopefully make your life a little easier.

CC4: The Future

CC4 is evolving! With Windows 8 just around the corner we saw this round as a good opportunity to have a look at the future of CC4. This session will include a look at Windows 8 in full as well as some other exciting new features of CC4. This is a real chance to see what's coming soon in the world of CC4 and what we are working on for a little further in the future.

The RM Technical Seminars: Past and Future

It's the 20th Anniversary of the RM Technical Seminars. In this session we will look back at some of the Technical Seminars we've presented and we'll also take a peek in the future of what we think will be relevant in the next twenty years - have your hover boards at the ready!
