David Wright
I joined RM Education in 1999 and have worked in Customer Support, Network Managed Services as a Technical Support Manager and in RM Training as their Lead Trainer. I have been part of the Seminar team for two years and I am looking forward to meeting you all at the Spring RM Technical Seminars. I have an honours degree in Computing and enjoy looking at how technology in education can be used to enthuse and engage users, and of course making the Network Support Team's life easier!
Simon Ansell
I joined RM Education as an Field Engineer in 2007, right around the time CC4 was in the process of being released. In 2008 I was seconded to the Net-Dev team where I worked with Community Connect 4 early adopters, before becoming a Lead Consultant delivering BSF and Academy projects. In my current role I provide high level support for installation engineers, specialising in Exchange, Virtualisation and SAN technologies, and I deliver internal training courses to new starters. This is my first year with the Seminars team.
Andy McKay
I joined RM Education in 2010 as part of the Managed Services team and have worked as a Support Engineer, Mobile Engineer and Apple Specialist, as well as spending last summer as part of the installations team - integrating Apple equipment with CC4 networks at various sites across the UK. In my current role I provide onsite support to Managed Service schools and deliver Apple training to apprentices and engineers. This is my first round with the seminars team.

Virtualisation Technologies
presented by Simon Ansell
Virtualisation is continuing to be a hot topic and this session we will be looking at some of the latest developments in this field. We will look at the different Hypervisors and the associated benefits, and demonstrate the new components introduced with Windows Server 2012.
We will also look at client Virtualisation, from the benefits of Hosted Applications to a full VDI infrastructure and how this can be implemented for both internal and external users, including those users with personal devices.
If you're looking at virtualisation options for your school then this session will help to inform your decisions.
Welcome to RM Unify
presented by David Wright
RM Unify is your LaunchPad to the cloud. With the plethora of cloud-based apps out there we will look at how you can make it as easy as possible for users to access these apps.
In this session we will be looking at how you can create and manage users in RM Unify including directly from your Community Connect 4 or any Active Directory-based network.
We will also be looking at how you can make RM Unify the go-to Launch Pad for all of your Internet resources.
Fine tuning your network support
presented by Andy McKay
In this session we explore some of the processes RM use in the schools that we manage and how a school network support team can reduce firefighting and increase proactive maintenance by following some of our simple, yet effective processes.
CC4 package without packaging
presented by David Wright
Community Connect 4 allows you to centrally deploy applications to managed computers on your network. When we first started using Windows Installer Packages you often had to repackage the software so that you could deploy it. There are often options other than repackaging a piece of software for deployment and in this session we will be looking at these options.
Powershelling your network
presented by Simon Ansell
In this session we will look at how you can use Microsoft PowerShell, which is a powerful scripting tool to automate some of the network management tasks you repeat on a regular basis, for example looking for "Illegal" files in user home folders.
We will run through the basics of using a PowerShell cmdlet to complete a task, through to piping the results to other cmdlets, using variables to make your scripts more generic and using .NET to customise the way your scripts look.
Getting the most from SharePoint
presented by Andy McKay
In this session we explore SharePoint Online as part of Office 365 and how schools can customise the standard setup to get the most from this online collaborative platform. We will also be looking at SharePoint server so if you're looking to use SharePoint, either in the cloud or in school then this session will help you get the most from this powerful collaboration tool.
BYOD - Integrated
presented by Simon Ansell
In the autumn 2012 seminar round, Simon talked about the 3 phases of introducing BYOD, with the Integrated phase bringing together the technologies required to balance security with usability.
In this session we will take a "flat" single subnet network and demonstrate the potential flaws of introducing a personal device into that network. To make the network more secure we will add a managed wireless solution with RADIUS authentication for connectivity, layer three switching and Access Control Lists for access to resources and implement a Transparent Proxy for Internet access.
Don't worry if you missed Simon's session in 2012, it will still make sense to you!
Windows Server 2012
presented by Andy McKay
In this session we explore some of the new and updated features in Microsoft's latest server operating system and how these can help with some of the issues school network support teams face regularly.
Collaboration in the digital classroom
presented by David Wright
This session is based around the Intel free eLearning resource designed for teachers - Collaboration in the digital classroom. We will look at how the network support team can help, and educate, teachers on getting the best out of online and classroom-based tools that students are probably using every day outside of school.

Realising the potential of ebooks in schools
This session will discuss the barriers to ebook adoption (cost, a lack of suitable devices and ease of management) and the issues faced by schools in embracing this new, but inevitable technology. We talk about how using ebooks can reduce school spend on new textbooks, especially in the light of curriculum change, and provide flexibility to your textbook selection.
We'll show you the latest version of the RM Books - the first ebook solution specifically designed for schools and share our development roadmap for new features that will mean RM Books will just keep on getting better and better.
