An error has prevented Kaleidos from being installed

When you receive this message it could be due to a couple of different things.

  • File and print sharing needs to be enabled

  • Need to be logged in with administrative rights

  • There is another sql program installed on the computer (In these cases un-installing the other application, installing Kaleidos, reinstalling other application has resolved the issue.)

  • Another reason you might get this error is if the default drive (C:) is changed for the Datastore (Database) installation drive to another drive. Currently the Microsoft SQL Server folder (the MSDE instance) MUST be placed on drive C

Installing the Kaleidos Database manually

If you are having trouble installing kaleidos there will be times when you will need to install it manually. To do this please use the information in this zip file.

Internet Explorer 7.0 and RM Math Framework Edition

When loading Kaleidos and you get a screen similar to this it means you have upgraded to IE 7.0. To fix this you must run this upgrade to your current Kaleidos version and install the Internet Explorer 7.0 fix. Please click here for installation instructions. Kaleidos must be upgraded to 2.1 prior to installing the IE7 fix!

Kaleidos-2_1.exe

Kaleidos_IE7_Fix.zip

76000 76:path not found method launcher launch

This error is generally caused by the above IE 7.0 fix being installed before the 2.1 upgrade. To fix please follow these instructions:

1. Using regedit browse to HKLM\Software\Research Machines\Software\Kaleidos
2. Delete the key IE7hotfixinstalled by right clicking and selecting delete
3. Close regedit Download and install IE7 hotfix then re-test Kaleidos

To use this tool you will need to be an administrator of your network and have access to the server. Click on the link and select either Open or Save As and save the file to a temporary folder on your server. You will need to unzip Kaleidos GPO Creation Tool.zip to create a folder which contains the following:

Renaming the Kaleidos Datastore

You will need this tool if you are ghosting or imaging Kaleidos Mobile Clients. The attached zip file contains a PDF with full instructions. If you are getting a 17 DBNETLIB error on a mobile client typically this tool will solve that problem because the computer name and the name in the kaleidos registry are different.

RM Easiteach Mac Secondary Content and Shockwave activities

Shockwave Player has not yet been ported to run natively on the new Intel-based Macintosh computers and currently only runs in Rosetta emulation mode. To install and use Shockwave Player on an Intel-based Macintosh, you will need to run the browser in Rosetta emulation mode. Follow the instructions below to launch your browser in Rosetta emulation mode.

Launching a Browser in Rosetta Emulation Mode

Applications like both Safari and Firefox default to running in native mode on the new Intel-based Macs and therefore you must follow a few simple steps to instead have then run in Rosetta emulation mode:

  • Quit out of the browser.
  • Go to your Applications folder and control-click on the browser application bundle.
  • In the context menu that appears select Get Info.
  • Under the General heading of the Info dialog select "Open using Rosetta".
  • Close the Info dialog box.
  • After completing the above steps the browser will now run in Rosetta emulation mode thus allowing you to install and use the Shockwave Player.

Installing the Shockwave Player

If you don't have the Shockwave Player installed, follow these steps in order to download, install and use the Shockwave Player:

  • Relaunch your browser in Rosetta emulation mode.
  • Go to the Shockwave Player Download Center and download the Shockwave Player installer.
  • Quit out of the browser.
  • Run the installer.

Windows Vista

RM Easiteach is now supported with Windows Vista. Please note that you need v3.4 of RM Easiteach to run on Vista.

RM Easiteach Secondary Content Packs

Please note that there are a couple of issues with these content packs.

Issue 1 Intel Macs and Shockwave files (MA Files)

The files which are triggering a browser error are caused by Shockwave. It works OK on PPC based Macs but will fail on Intel based Macs. This is because the Shockwave plugin has not been ported to run natively on Intel Macs. There is a work-around but it is not pretty - run Safari or Firefox) is under Rosetta emulation. To achieve this, Safari must be quit, and have its properties (In Get Info) changed. There is an Adobe Knowledge Base article here:

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=82216d24&sli

Issue 2 Camtasia files not working on Firefox 1.5

There is a minimum requirement for Firefox v2, as some files do not open on Firefox1.5.

Adding resources into the Multimedia Bank

For example a $1 bill

Just browse to:

C:\Program Files\Research Machines\Easiteach\Multimedia\Money\American

Then copy and paste this graphic into the American folder and you will have a $1 bill in your Multimedia Bank.

Macintosh Compatible

Is RM Easiteach 3.3 Mac compatible? Yes, RM Easiteach is available (v1.2) and runs on Mac OS 10.3.9 or greater at this time.

RM Easiteach asking for a license key or says Demo in the background?

The RM Easiteach Installer cleverly installs 3 things in 1. First RM Easiteach; Second the license for RM Easiteach; and Third a pack of free lessons. If you got an error message, the most likely reason is that you stopped the installer before it had finished. (You need to click Install 3 times and Finish 4 times).

The quickest resolution is to go Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove programs, and remove RM Easiteach. Then put the CD back in and install all 3 elements. When you have clicked finish 4 times, start RM Easiteach from the 'e' icon on the desktop, then go File> Open>Starter pack and click on the links to see the lessons. Do this, then book some free online training and we will answer all your RM Easiteach queries.

RM Easiteach Mac

Handwriting recognition - support is provided via the Mac OS Ink facilities rather than the recognition software supplied with Windows. Handwriting recognition is only available when a Pen device such as a Whiteboard or graphics tablet is connected. If the Mac has never been connected to the whiteboard the Handwriting button will not be displayed. When it is displayed, and you are connected to a whiteboard, switching the button on will enable handwriting, such that drawing on the canvas will be taken as handwriting to be recognised. Switching it off will send all input direct to Easiteach. For more information on using Handwriting recognition on Macs see the Mac help guides.
